Description of the attraction

Among the attractions of the Greek city of Kalamata (Peloponnese), the Railway Museum, also known as the Kalamata Railway Park, undoubtedly deserves special attention. This excellent open-air museum is located just five minutes walk from the central square of Kalamata towards the city port.

The initiator of the establishment of the Railway Museum in Kalamata in 1986 was the current mayor of the city, Mr. Stavros Benos. At the level of the city authorities, it was decided to place the museum on the territory of the old railway station "Kalamata Limin" and adjacent lands. The grand opening took place in September 1986, but the final work on the arrangement of the park-museum was completed only in 1990. Today, the Kalamata Railway Museum is the largest and perhaps the most interesting railway museum in Greece. The total area of the museum is 54,000 square meters.

Today, on the territory of the Railway Park-Museum, you will see, in fact, the railway station itself, including the two-story station building built at the beginning of the 20th century, a metal pedestrian bridge, the length of which is 28 m, a water tower, passenger platforms, tracks of locomotive and carriage facilities, various equipment and, of course, an impressive collection of railway vehicles - seven steam locomotives and one diesel station wagon, two railcars, passenger cars of the first and second class, as well as eight samples of freight transport of various types.

The Railway Park also has basketball and volleyball courts, a variety of entertainment for children and a small cafe located on the ground floor in the old station building.
