Description of the attraction

Although the Market Square was badly damaged during the Second World War and most of the buildings were rebuilt from ruins, it is one of the finest examples of 15th century red brick architecture. The houses are decorated with glazed terracotta friezes and sculptures.

Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sts. George and Jacob is the oldest of the three parish churches in the old city of Hanover. The building, which has survived to this day in the style of North German brick Gothic, dates back to the 14th century. With its remarkable 97-meter-high tower, the Church of Sts. George and Jacob is the hallmark of the city. The pride of the church is the Gothic altar with scenes of the Passion of the Lord, decorated with engraving on copper by Martin Schongauer.
