Description of the attraction

Unique medieval buildings, mainly for economic purposes, are located on Melnichny Island, which is called Wyspa Mlynska in all Polish travel guides. This green island - a true oasis of peace and quiet - is located right in the center of Bydgoszcz.

A few centuries ago, the island was home to factories, factories, breweries, dyeing houses and barns for storing food products. Now elite houses have been built here, in which not everyone can afford an apartment. Neat residential areas are interspersed with squares and parks.

On the banks of the Mlynówka River, historic buildings made of red bricks, where salt, grain, and malt were previously preserved, admire their reflections. The part of the city near the water is unofficially called Bydgoszcz Venice. Most of the surviving old buildings were erected in the 19th century, but some of them date back to the 18th or even the 15th century. For example, the foundation and basements of the White Granary were laid in the Middle Ages. Almost all buildings have been carefully restored, many of them are given over to exhibition halls and museums. So, in the building of the Red Granary there is a gallery of modern art, and the mills have been turned into demonstration halls of handicrafts.

In 1594, a mint was built on Melnichny Island, which minted money until 1688. Now you can see its remains.

Near the embankment in the central part of Vyspa Mylnska there is a city beach with sea sand, a playground and an open-air theater.

You can get to the island by crossing one of three bridges.
