Description of the attraction
The Bronx Zoo is one of the world's largest urban zoos. Located on one hundred and seven hectares, it contains about four thousand animals (more than six hundred species) from all continents.
It appeared on the land that was once owned by Fordham University, which sold this site to New York at the end of the 19th century for just a thousand dollars - on the condition that a zoo would be founded here. Perhaps the Catholic university, located in the village of Fordham north of New York, wanted to shield itself from the oncoming city with a kind of buffer. Of course, in the end the city swallowed up the entire area, but the townspeople had a great place to relax.
The zoo opened in 1899. Then in his collection there were about eight hundred animals, including black and polar bears, grizzlies, sea lions. The pool for sea lions has survived to this day, as well as many other attractions of the 19th and 20th centuries - pavilions in the Beaux-art style, decorated with sculptural images of wild animals, Rockefeller fountain, figures of jaguars, a huge boulder made of pink granite, the Rainy Gate. Memorial Gates. Built in 1934 and designed by Paul Menship, this bronze Art Deco gate was dedicated to the famous American hunter and photographer Paul James Rainey. The attention of a visitor entering the zoo from East Fordham Road is still attracted by forged animal figures among stylized plants.
There are so many entertainments in the zoo that many come more than once. You can ride in monorail trailers - this trip, called Wild Asia, will give you the opportunity to see rhinos lying in the mud, protecting themselves from the sun, elephants pouring water from their trunks, red pandas lying in trees, antelopes galloping on the hills, and in the reeds of the Bronx -The river is fishing for egrets. It's good to have binoculars with you - they will definitely come in handy on such a walk! In the "gorilla forest" you can observe not only gorillas, but also charming pygmy monkeys and other monkeys. Visitors can admire the majestic Amur tigers on Tiger Mountain. And the section "Madagascar" pleases with the spectacle of lemurs, geckos, crocodiles and hissing cockroaches.
Children are happy to ride the "carousel of beetles", visit the seabird colony, the butterfly garden, the so-called children's zoo - there they are taught to behave like different animals. Many people rush to the dinosaur safari, which was opened in 2013, but it should be borne in mind that the baby may be frightened by the roaring and grinning figures of prehistoric reptiles, which on this walk now and then appear from the bushes.
