The history of Turin goes back to ancient times. It began with the military camp of the Romans Castra Taurinorum. It was founded around 28 BC. NS. Later it was renamed in honor of the emperor Augustus, calling it the colony of Augusta Taurinorum.
Ancient city
In the 10th century, Turin became the seat of the Margraves of Ardinuichi. They ruled over this feud, which was known as the Turin Mark. In the XI century, the Turin mark became a joint possession of the local princes-bishops and counts of Savoy.
The Savoyard dynasty needed a capital, and in 1563 Turin became such. Emmanuel Philibert was behind this. This period is associated with the construction of new palaces and residences. At the same time, the University of Turin started working again. This educational institution was founded in 1404, but later it was dissolved. Now classes have begun again for many who wish to gain knowledge.
When the War of the Spanish Succession was unleashed, one of its main events was the siege of Turin, which was organized by the French in 1706. The city did not give up for 117 days. After the victory over the French, the Savoyard government assumed royal titles, and Filippo Juvarra was tasked with making Turin the same royal capital of Europe as in other states. This is how Turin takes on a metropolitan significance.
For four years, Turin remained the main city of the unified Italy. This was marked by the implementation of construction projects that have become the largest in the south of Europe. And although over time Turin lost its metropolitan importance, it was this construction that made the city so significant among the rest of the major cities in Italy.
Modern history of Turin
1902 for Turin was marked by the holding of the World Exhibition, which was then a huge, epoch-making event. The beginning of the next, XXI century, became no less important for Turin - in 2006 it became another Olympic city in the world, hosting the Winter Olympic Games.
Today Turin is a large industrial city, second only to Milan. This is the real center of the Italian car industry, which is also associated with many pages of the history of the city. In addition, the chemical, clothing and textile industries are well developed here.
