Description of the attraction

The Museum of Caricatures is housed in an old Baroque building in the center of Mexico City. In 1612, King's College was located on this site, but this building was built in the 70s of the 18th century. Some parts of the building were rebuilt during the restorations and renovations. The baroque façade and patio is a prime example of an 18th century house. Opposite the main entrance is a long corridor that leads to the courtyard. The windows and doors of the front part are framed with gray-white stone, and the top is replete with floral ornaments.

The museum opened its doors in 1987. The main collection occupies one of the halls on the ground floor; most of the paintings exhibited there are of a political nature. They criticize President Porfirio Diaz, who was ousted in 1910. Most of the drawings are by Jose Guadelupe Posado. The adjoining Hall of Mexican Expressive Art usually hosts temporary exhibitions.

The museum has exhibited works by renowned Mexican artists Jose Clemente Orozco and Frida Kahlo. On the top floor of the museum there is a room for the Mexican Society of Cartoonists. It houses temporary exhibitions, art seminars, conferences and book presentations.

It should be noted that not all of the museum's expositions are devoted to caricature. Within its walls, thematic exhibitions are also held, for example, "Animation of the 20th century" or "Modern pirates". It often hosts seminars on the history and methods of caricature, the history of painting and graphics.
