Description of the attraction
St George's Chapel is part of a palace complex in Windsor, near London. Windsor Castle has been the official residence of British monarchs for many centuries. Of course, the royal residence could not exist without its own "home" church. At first it was a small chapel, but in the 14th-15th centuries it was rebuilt into a large Gothic-style temple. The remains of King Henry VIII and Jane Seymour are buried here. The temple suffered greatly from looters during the civil wars and church reforms, but under Queen Victoria, the chapel regained its former splendor. Victoria's husband, Prince Consort Albert, was buried here.
In 1348, the Noble Order of the Garter was founded - the highest knightly order in Great Britain and one of the oldest knightly orders in the world. The Chapel of St George in Windsor became an order church. Here, a place is assigned to each knight of the order, and under the arches of the temple you can see the coats of arms of the now healthy knights. Every June, there are ceremonies and a procession of the Knights of the Order in Windsor.
St George's Chapel in Windsor (like some other churches in the United Kingdom) is not subordinate to the bishop, but directly to the British monarch as head of the Church of England.
