Description of the attraction

Cozumel Island Reefs National Park was established by order of President Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de Leo on July 19, 1996. The park covers an area of 20 kilometers. The climate here is subtropical, the average daytime air temperature on the coast is + 26-28 degrees, and the water is about +25 degrees. The park is located on the island of Cozumel, the reef system of which is famous throughout the world and is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef - this is the second largest reef system in the world.

Reefs cover almost the entire perimeter of the island of Cozumel, but the Cozumel Island Reefs National Park itself occupies only the southern part of the island. This place is popular with those tourists who like active recreation in nature, excursions to the jungle and diving to the reefs are organized here.

Sea turtles are especially protected in the park area. Representatives of four rare species of turtles flood the beaches every year, here you can see the green turtle, loggerhead, and Hawksbill.

In addition to waterfowl, the rarest endangered black corals - antipataria - are also subject to vigilance. They are often hunted by poachers, as they are highly valued in jewelry.

The National Park in the south of Cozumel is a favorite destination for divers from all over the world. An entire ship was sunk here to create an artificial reef. In addition, scuba divers can admire the famous reefs of Satan's Throat, Maracaibo, Paradise and their marine life.
