Description of the attraction

The National Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Moldova is one of the main attractions of Chisinau. The museum is housed in an old building built in the style of the Italian Renaissance. Originally there was a girls' high school, which was founded under the leadership of Princess Dadiani. Only children from noble families could study here, therefore the school building was erected in accordance with the aristocratic canons of that time.

The Museum of Fine Arts was opened in 1939. The first exposition was a large-scale photo gallery, which was completely lost during the Second World War. After the end of the war, the museum was restored.

Today, there are about 33 thousand exhibits, the collection of which covers the period from the Middle Ages to the present day; Moldovan fine art is widely represented. The main value is the collection of icons of the Middle Ages, illustrating the development of Orthodoxy in the territory of Moldova. The collection of fine art - painting, graphics, decorative and applied art - is also of great interest to visitors. Here are collected creations of Moldavian, Russian and European masters. The most valuable are the original paintings by Rembrandt, Aivazovsky, Repin and others.
