Description of the attraction
Albertina is one of the most important museums in the world, located in the center of Vienna. The palace got its name from the founder of the collection, Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen (1738-1822). It houses one of the largest and most significant graphic collections in the world (about 65,000 drawings) and about 1 million antique prints, as well as more modern graphic works, photographs and architectural drawings. In addition to its graphic collection, the museum recently acquired two unique Impressionist collections from the early 20th century, some of which will be on permanent display. The museum also frequently hosts temporary exhibitions.
The collection, which began in 1776 by Duke Albert von Saxe-Teschen, includes such famous works as Dürer's Hare and Praying Hands, works by Rubens, Klimt, Picasso, Schiele and Cezanne.
The permanent exhibition of Albertina contains the most interesting works of art from the last 130 years: from French Impressionism to German Expressionism, Russian avant-garde and modernity. Monet's "Pond with Water Lilies", Degas "Dancers" and "Portrait of a Girl" by Renoir, Chagall, Malevich - such masterpieces are presented to the eyes of visitors.
In 2008, the collection of the Batliners, consisting of works by Malevich, Goncharov, Picasso and many other outstanding artists, was transferred to the Albertine for indefinite storage.
In addition to the richest collection of graphics, the Albertina contains collections of photographs, as well as an architectural collection in drawings and sketches. The architectural collection includes about 50,000 plans and models, obtained mainly from the drafting department of the Imperial Court, from the collection of works by Baron Philip von Stoch.
Today Albertina is one of the most visited museums in Austria.
