Interestingly, the capital of Spain is not the dream of a tourist crossing the border of this European state. Walking around Barcelona, one of the most beautiful cities in Spain and Europe, can show and tell a traveler much more.

It was here that the great Spaniards lived and worked - the surrealist artist Salvador Dali and the architect Antoni Gaudi, the latter's masterpieces are the main attraction of Barcelona and the main attraction for guests.

Walks in the old town of Barcelona

You can determine the route of travel in the districts and quarters of Barcelona on your own. Or you can join some tourist group, which you meet at every step, and with it immerse yourself in a particular era, become an absentee participant in certain heroic events.

The Gothic Quarter is the heart of Barcelona, the historic center of the Catalan capital. Its main attractions are houses and streets that have survived the centuries and have survived to this day. Most of the architectural masterpieces presented here date from the XIV-XV centuries, and some buildings have survived from the times of the great Roman Empire, others were erected by Spanish architects:

  • the cathedral, consecrated in honor of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia;
  • Royal Palace;
  • chapel named after Saint Agatha.

Interestingly, this particular cathedral is the modern residence of the Archbishop of Spain, although most tourists believe that the head of the Spanish Church is in the Sagrada Familia (known as the Sagrada Familia).

On a visit to Antoni Gaudi

Most of the architectural masterpieces of this famous Spanish architect are concentrated in the Eixample area. Rejecting all the canons of classical construction, he was able to make his fantastic dreams come true, making Barcelona the most attractive Spanish city for tourists.

His main masterpiece - the Sagrada Familia Cathedral - has become the hallmark of the Catalan capital, replicated on numerous photos, postcards and magnets. Moreover, it is known that Gaudi did not have time to complete the construction, and therefore modern architects have a chance to try to complete the construction and write their name in history.

From other buildings of the great Gaudí in Barcelona, you can see the UNESCO-protected Palais Guell, Casa Batlló, Vicens and Mila, known as the "Quarry".
