The rivers of Belgium (if you look at the map of the country) look like a thick blue grid that covers the territory of the country. The rivers here are characterized by a calm flow. Many of the country's rivers are navigable.
River Scheldt
The Scheldt channel crosses the lands of three countries - France, Belgium and the Netherlands. The total length of the current is four hundred and thirty kilometers with a total catchment area of thirty-five and a half square kilometers.
The source of the river is in the territory of Picardy (Ardennes mountains). Then the division of the East and West Scheldt takes place. The confluence point is the water area of the North Sea. The Scheldt has several tributaries, but the Rüpel and Lis rivers are called the main ones. The river is navigable for three hundred and forty kilometers.
Meuse river
The bed of the Meuse cuts through the lands of France, Belgium and the Netherlands. The total length of the river is nine hundred and twenty-five kilometers with a catchment area of thirty-six thousand squares.
The source of the Meuse is located in French lands (plateau Langres). Then the river takes a northern direction and passes to the lands of Belgium. The Maas estuary is located in the Netherlands. Here the river, after joining one of the branches of the Rhine, before flowing into the water area of the North Sea, forms a common delta.
The river is replenished by rains, as well as during the period of snow melting. The Meuse channel is navigable almost to the very upper course. In its lower course, the riverbed is located above the adjacent valley, and in order to protect the territory from floods, the river is surrounded by dams.
Semois river
The Semois is a river that, from its source to the end of its journey, is located on the territory of Belgium. The river bed has a total length of two hundred and ten kilometers and runs along the southeastern part of the country. The total catchment area is one thousand three hundred twenty-nine squares.
The source of Semois is in Arona (Luxembourg province, near the borders with the Kingdom of Luxembourg). The river takes a western direction and safely flows into the Meuse, becoming its right tributary.
Urt River
Urth is one of the rivers in Belgium that flows into the waters of the Meuse (right tributary). The length of the river flow is one hundred and sixty-five kilometers with a drainage basin of three thousand six hundred and twenty-four square kilometers.
The source of the Urt River is the confluence of two rivers: Western and Eastern Urt. Then the river crosses the lands of the province of Liege. The journey of Urth around the country ends in the city of Liege, on the territory of which the confluence of the Urth and the Meuse takes place. The river bed passes through the territory of several cities - Auton, Amoire, La Roche-en-Ardenne, Durbuy, Aigneu, Amoire and Liege.
